An alarming new form of distracted driving

When you think of distracted driving, what comes to mind?

  • Talking on a cell phone?
  • Sending a text message or email?
  • Typing in an address on a GPS?

While these are all prime examples of distracted driving, there is a new trend that will shock and scare you:

Taking selfies while driving.

Young drivers are especially at risk for engaging in this dangerous behavior.

In an effort to stay connected to their peers at all times, young drivers will take pictures of themselves driving and post them to Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and other social media sites and apps.

And always on a mission to get the "perfect shot", these drivers will take multiple pictures. Some are taken when the car is stopped, but others are taken when the car is moving. No matter when the photo is taken, the dangers are real and significant.

According to 2014 research by the National Safety Council, an estimated 26 percent of motor vehicle accidents involve cell phone use. Five percent involve texting while driving while 21 percent involve talking on a cell phone. A 2015 study conducted by AT&T found 17 percent of drivers admit to taking selfies while driving.

So what can be done to keep our roadways safe?

  • Parents: Enforce a zero-tolerance cell phone use while driving policy for your teen drivers. If they break it, take away their phone.
  • All drivers: Commit to stopping all cell phone use while driving. That includes texting, talking, sending emails, taking selfies, and other dangerous behavior.

If you have been injured in an auto accident caused by a distracted driver, schedule a free consultation with an attorney from Cantafio Hammond. We would be happy to discuss your legal options at our offices in Denver or Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
